7. Local business and economy

A public street with shops and restaurants.

Public spaces support our local:

  • businesses
  • economy.

A map of Australia with NSW highlighted. Next to the map is a dollar symbol.

Our economy is the way NSW makes and spends money.

This can include:

A person working in a café.

  • cafés

People buying food and items from outdoor market stalls.

  • outdoor markets

A band playing on a stage.

  • places people play live music.

A person doing an activity with a sun icon above them, and a person doing an activity with a moon icon above them.

Public spaces should have lots of different activities and fun things to do:

  • during the day
  • at night.

A group of people in a public park and garden.

This will help different groups of people:

  • go to that space
  • connect with that space
  • be interested in that space.

An arrow pointing from a moon icon with a safety icon to a dollar symbol.

And if we make our public spaces safe and welcoming at night, it can help our economy.

Public spaces can also support local businesses if there are places for people to:

A person sitting on a public bench.

  • sit and rest

A group of people meeting in a café.

  • feel like part of the community.
